چکیده

BACKGROUND Third molars present more problems than other teeth because they are the last teeth to erupt, and so it is important to assess their development when designing an orthodontic treatment plan. The aim of this study was to compare the angulation of the mandibular third molar and retromolar space before and after orthodontic treatment in cases involving first premolar extraction. MATERIAL AND METHODS 76 patients, 59 women (77.63%) and 17 men (22.36%), were recruited from the Orthodontics Clinic at Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (Mexico). Panoramic radiographs were analyzed before and after orthodontic treatment that included first premolar extractions, measuring retromolar space (RS) and the angles formed by the intersection of the axes of the third and second molar (α) and the intersection of the axis of the mandibular plane and third molar (β). RESULTS The data obtained underwent statistical analysis. The angle α and β showed statistically significant differences on the left side in women. In men, only the right side α angle showed significant differences. Retromolar space increased significantly on both sides for both sexes. CONCLUSIONS Third molar angulation presents different behaviors between men and women, with greater verticalization in women. Key words:Third molar, retromolar space, orthodontics.

The effect of fixed orthodontic treatment with first premolar extraction on mandibular third molars angulation and retromolar space

Introduction: In most orthodontic patients, mandibular 3rd molars are in early stages of calcification, and prediction of eruption status would be difficult during the course of orthodontic treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of first premolar extraction with moderate anchorage on angular changes of third mandibular molar after orthodontic treatment. Materials & Methods...

Influence of first and second premolar extraction or non-extraction treatments on mandibular third molar angulation and position. A comparative study.

The mandibular third molar (3M) is the tooth that is most often impacted, with lack of space being one of the reasons. In some orthodontic treatments, premolars are extracted in order to create space. The aims of our study are: firstly, to assess the changes in the angulation and position of the 3M in cases treated either with or without extraction of the first or second premolars; secondly, to...

Mandibular third molar space in different antero-posterior skeletal patterns.

Retromolar space has long been identified as a major factor in the aetiology of mandibular third molar impaction. The aims of this study were to compare mandibular third molar space between the different antero-posterior (A-P) skeletal patterns, between erupted and impacted third molars in the different A-P skeletal patterns, and to report on the status of third molar eruption/impaction among t...

Objective: Extraction of premolars is believed to affect the eruption of third molars. This comparative study aimed to assess the change in angulation of third molars following first/second premolar extraction versus non-extraction orthodontic treatments. Methods: This historical cohort study was conducted on patients assigned to three treatment groups: extraction of mandibular first premolars ...
